Link to a page on your own website if you can. Then you can change what is on that page later without printing a new code.

Most sets come from Sanzo Wada’s 1933 dictionary of colour combinations, picked for contrast that scans.

Everything happens in your browser. What you type, your WiFi password and your logo never leave your device. For print, use the SVG: it stays sharp at any size.

Link to a menu page, not a PDF

Most menu codes open a PDF. It works, but it is the worst version for the guest: tiny text, pinching and zooming, and a slow download on a weak connection. A menu as a normal page on your website reads well on any phone, loads fast and can be translated.

It helps you too. You can change a price or a dish in a minute without printing anything, because the code stays the same and only the page changes. And Google, as well as AI assistants like ChatGPT, can read a menu page but not the text inside a PDF scan or a photo. We explained why that matters in does ChatGPT know your business?

Table cards that work

  • Print the code about 3 to 4 cm wide for a table card, so guests can scan it without picking the card up.
  • Add a line of text under it, like "Scan for the menu". You can do that above.
  • Use a matte card. Glossy lamination reflects the lights and makes scanning harder.
  • Test it at a table, in the evening light, with two or three different phones.

Keep paper menus too

Not every guest wants to use their phone at dinner, and some cannot: older guests, people with poor eyesight, or anyone whose battery is empty. A few printed menus to hand out on request keep everyone welcome. If you translate your menu page, mention it on the card, for example "Menu in English, Deutsch, Italiano".

Questions

Can I change the menu without printing new codes?

Yes, if the code links to a page you can edit, such as yourrestaurant.com/menu. The code stays the same; you only update the page.

Can the code open a PDF?

Yes. Paste the link to the PDF. But a normal menu page is easier to read on a phone and Google can read it, which a PDF scan does not allow.

Does the code expire?

No. It is a static code with your link inside it. There is no subscription and nothing that runs out.

Can I put our logo in the middle?

Yes. Upload it in step 2, and the scan test tells you if the code still reads well.
